News Dick Van Dyke Will Appear in Mary Poppins Sequel He joins a cast that includes Emily Blunt and Lin-Manuel Miranda.

Bye Bye Birdie Tony winner Dick Van Dyke, who was nominated for a Golden Globe for creating the role of chimney sweep Bert opposite Oscar winner Julie Andrews in the 1964 film Mary Poppins, will appear in the sequel to the Disney classic, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

In a feature about artists in their 90s, veteran actor Van Dyke told the industry website, “[The sequel] supposedly takes place 20 years later and the kids are all grown up…It's a great cast — Meryl Streep, Angela Lansbury and that guy [Lin-Manuel Miranda] from Hamilton.”

Rob Marshall is directing Mary Poppins Returns, which will co-star Emily Blunt and Miranda. Filming is expected to begin in London in early 2017.

Mary Poppins Returns will hit cinemas December 25, 2018. Producers are Marshall, John DeLuca, and Marc Platt.

About the original Mary Poppins film, Van Dyke said, “There was a spirit about that thing from the very beginning…Walt [Disney] had me in, and I heard the score and saw the scenes storyboarded on a wall, and I just knew.”

Van Dyke also discussed the Mary Poppins sequel in an interview with Entertainment Tonight:

Dick Van Dyke has starred in several TV series, including The Dick Van Dyke Show, The New Dick Van Dyke Show, Van Dyke and Company, and Diagnosis Murder. He has been seen on the silver screen in Mary Poppins, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, and Dick Tracy, and his theatrical credits include The Girls Against the Boys; Bye, Bye Birdie; and The Music Man.
