Southwark Playhouse Borough hosts the world-premiere run of Fun at the Beach Romp-Bomp-a-Lomp!! beginning May 24. The new musical, a send-up of bad jukebox musicals, features a book by Martin Landry and a score by Brandon Lambert. The production will officially open May 29 in the London company's The Large, with the limited run continuing through June 22.
The cast includes Tom Babbage as Joe, Ellie Clayton as Mary Joe, Damien James as Dickie, Janice Landry as Chastity, Katie Oxman as Chickie, and Jack Whittle as Dude. The ensemble comprises Bradley Adams and Dixie Newman, with Martin Landry completing the cast as the Announcer.
The show, set at a contest where hopefuls compete to be crowned King or Queen of the Beach, features a score of parodies of retro hits. Press notes describe the piece as "Grease meets Squid Game."
“Fun at the Beach Romp-Bomp-a-Lomp!! was born in 2018, when I witnessed my co-writer, Brandon Lambert, performing in a jukebox musical (which shall remain unnamed)," shared Martin Landry in an earlier statement. "The music was so much fun and completely irresistible, but the story was staggeringly painful. After the show (and after a few drinks to ease our distress), we asked ourselves a seemingly impossible question: what if we wrote something even worse? And now, here we are! We hope you enjoy Fun at the Beach Romp-Bomp-a-Lomp!!”
Mark Bell (The Play That Goes Wrong) is directing the premiere, leading a creative team that includes set and costume designer Emily Bestow, sound designer Andy Graham, choreographer Francesca Jaynes, and lighting designer Adam King. Lambert serves as music director.
Paul Virides Productions is general managing with James Anderton providing production management.
