David Byrne's American Utopia is staging a one-night-only benefit performance March 30. The special concert, American Utopia Farewell!, will support the former Talking Heads frontman's nonprofit Arbutus.
Ticketholders will receive orchestra seating for the show, an exclusive 20-30 minute post-performance conversation with Byrne and guests, and a gift bag. VIP ticketholders will additionally receive signed copies of Byrne's book, A History of the World (in Dingbats), and a vinyl LP of the David Byrne’s American Utopia original cast recording.
“I created American Utopia with the seeds of curiosity and imagination, and those same seeds are why I founded Arbutus,” shares Byrne. “The proceeds from the event on March 30th will allow Arbutus to continue our work at Reasons to Be Cheerfuland our world premiere of Theater of the Mind, hopefully making the world a little lighter and a little brighter.”
American Utopia features Byrne with band members Jacquelene Acevedo, Gustavo Di Dalva, Daniel Freedman, Chris Giarmo, Tim Keiper, Tendayi Kuumba, Karl Mansfield, Abe Nouri, Mauro Refosco, Stéphane San Juan, and Angie Swan. The company standbys are Renée Albulario, Alena Ciera, Chris Eddleton, Evan Frierson, and Natalie Tenenbaum.
The Tony Award-honored musical was slated to close in March, but recently announced a "final extension" through April 3. It is currently playing at the St. James Theatre. The concert-style musical features hit songs from Byrne's time performing with the Talking Heads, as well as his solo career.
Tickets for the benefit can be purchased through Eventbrite. The nonprofit is also partnering with Propeller to give fans the opportunity to win a pair of premium tickets for a minimum donation of $5.
