The 29th Annual Critics Choice Awards have announced their nominees, and the list is filled to the brim with theatrical talent. Winners will be named January 14, 2024 in a televised ceremony on The CW.
The film adaptation of The Color Purple continues to have legs amongst awards bodies, racking up nominations for Best Picture, Best Acting Ensemble, Best Costume Design, and Best Hair and Makeup, as well as a stand alone Best Supporting Actress nomination for Danielle Brooks, honoring her performance as Sofia. Brooks previously received a Tony nomination for her interpretation of the role on stage.
Maestro, the biopic centered on Leonard Bernstein, also had quite the showing, including Best Picture, Best Original Screenplay, Best Cinematography, Best Editing, Best Hair and Makeup, as well as a Best Director and Best Actor nod for Bradley Cooper, and a Best Actress nod for Carey Mulligan.
Tony nominee Colman Domingo picked up a Best Actor nomination for Rustin, as did Tony winner Jeffrey Wright for American Fiction and Paul Giamatti for The Holdovers. Additionally, Emma Stone's performance in Poor Things puts her and Mulligan in competition for Best Actress.
Finally, Lindy Hemming's costumes for the movie musical Wonka received a Best Costume Design nod, and Wish, Disney's newest animated film starring Ariana DeBose, received a Best Animated Film nod, as well as a Best Song nod for "This Wish" as performed by DeBose.
