Gordon, who also penned Irena's Vow and the London stage adaptations of Terms of Endearment and Rain Man, based the play on his 1995 screenplay. Michael Parva directs the drama that will officially open June 6 for a run through July 1. 

Kimball, a Tony nominee for Memphis, plays Willie, with Guy Burnet ((Henry Davidson), Robert Hogan (Harold Humson), Jim Lorenzo (Milton Glenn), Thomas Ryan (Judge Clawson), Ryan Scoble (Bailiff), Larisa Polonsky (Mary McCasslin), John Fitzgibbon (Henkin), John Stanisci (Byron Davidson), Daren Kelly (Bill McNeill), Joseph Adams (Houlihan), J. Stephen Brantley (Swenson/Guard), Ian Holcomb (Foreman of Jury/Photographer), Anthoula Katsimatides (Blanche) and Richard Fiske (Derek Simpson/Jailer).

Here's how 59E59 Theaters bills the play: "Inspired by a compelling true story, Murder In the First is a gripping drama about the murder trial that blew open the deplorable treatment of the prisoners at Alcatraz, the most notorious correctional institution in U.S. history. The stage version of Dan Gordon's 1995 film explores the unlikely friendship that develops between the young, idealistic attorney and the prisoner that he was brought in to defend."
