Carmel Dean (Funny Girl, The Notebook) is now in the midst of composing R.A Dick's romantic-fantasy novel The Ghost and Mrs. Muir for the stage. Writing both music and lyrics, Dean's adaptation is expected to play London upon completion.

I can’t wait to bring it to life in collaboration with the rest of this brilliant and passionate team!"

Dean joins novelist and playwright Penelope Faith, who has adapted the book for the stage. Directed by Kenneth Hoyt, The Ghost and Mrs. Muir will receive a full read through in September before officially arriving on the London stage in 2025.

The Ghost and Mrs. Muir centers on a newly widowed woman and her companionship with the ghost of a long dead sea captain. As she learns to navigate her way through her grief, the pair endeavor to transcend both life and the beyond to liberate themselves from loneliness.

The original novel was written by Josephine Leslie in 1945, under the pseudonym R.A Dick. Taking the initials from her father Robert Abercromby, Leslie used the pseudonym to overcome the sexist pressures that silenced female writers in the commercial industry.

A film adaptation, starring Gene Tierney and Rex Harrison, was released by 20th Century Fox in 1947. The novel has been adapted several times as a radio play, as well as adapted into a television series in 1968. This is the largest scale theatrical adaptation of the story up to this point.
