Liff's career as a stage manager and production stage manager included original Broadway productions of My Fair Lady, Oliver! and many productions from the office of David Merrick. Liff changed careers in the late 1960s and became an associate producer on shows including Woody Allen's Don't Drink the Water, and Kander & Ebb's the Happy Time, before switching careers again and becoming a talent agent for the William Morris Agency. He also served several terms on the Nominating Committee for the Tony Awards.
Liff was honered with Primary Stages' Dedication to New Plays Award in 2010, presented to an individual or group who have made significant contributions to the advancement of new plays. The event featured tributes by Manny Azenberg, Marvin Einhorn, Angela Lansbury and Philip J. Smith.
