Audiences are flocking to Broadway's Ambassador Theatre to see the new star of the long-running Chicago revival, Ariana Madix. The Dancing With the Stars and Vanderpump Rules star joined January 29, sending box-office returns skyrocketing—last week was the production's highest-grossing non-holiday week ever. Madix's limited engagement as Roxie Hart continues through March 24, but with grosses like that, one wonders if the Weisslers will be extending her stay (assuming her schedule allows, of course).

The situation was less rosy for much of the rest of Broadway, however. Cumulative grosses dropped by 4.6% compared to the week prior, with only eight of the 25 currently running shows seeing an increase from the previous week. Winter is always Broadway's slow season, with tourism light following the Christmas-New Year's holidays and before schools start to go on spring break in March and April.

Unfortunately, we're likely to see that dip even lower in the coming weeks. Harmony and Purlie Victorious both closed February 4 leaving this week with two shows less of grosses. And, How to Dance in Ohio is scheduled to play its final performance February 11, furthering that situation.

It's not all bleak though. We're also about to start getting a swath of new titles. Doubt began previews February 3, and The Notebook, Water for Elephants, My Son's a Queer (But What Can You Do?), and An Enemy of the People are all on the horizon. The usually high-grossing Sweeney Todd is also due to welcome new stars Sutton Foster and Aaron Tveit February 9, which may well restore the Sondheim revival to reliable top five status.

Speaking of that top five, The Lion King led the pack yet again last week, bringing in $1.67 million. The rest of the group was filled out by fellow mainstays Hamilton, Wicked, Merrily We Roll Along, and MJ The Musical.
