Industry News Broadway-Aimed Alexandra Billings Musical S/He and Me to Receive Industry Workshop

Joanne Gordon directs the musical, which is based on the life of trans actor and activist Billings.

S/He and Me, a new Broadway-aimed musical based on the life of trans actor and activist Alexandra Billings, is set for a March 2024 industry workshop.

Joanne Gordon, who co-wrote Billings' memoir This Time for Me, will direct the production. S/He and Me also features a score by Andre Catrini.

Billings is known for her roles on Broadway and on television, notably her performance as Davina in Amazon's Transparent. She made her Broadway debut in The Nap in 2018. In September 2019, it was announced that Billings would be the first openly trans actor to play Madame Morrible in Broadway's Wicked. She joined the cast January 21, 2020, and remained with the show through January 30, 2022.

Billings has been vocal about her transition, her experience living with AIDS, and LGBTQIA+ activism throughout her career. For her work, Billings has received accolades including the Human Rights Campaign Visibility Award.

S/He and Me brings Billings' story to life on stage, as she details the struggles and triumphs of her transition, which began in 1980, and all that followed.

"I know that when I was 12 years old, had there been a show like this, it would have saved me three separate suicide attempts," Billings said in a statement. "S/He and Me is a reminder of our responsibility to humanity—trans or not. Our story resonates with a truth that needs to be told. This time for us!”

S/He and Me is produced by Tom D'Angora and Michael D'Angora (HarmonyHow to Dance in Ohio) and Schmengie Inc.

Show dates, casting, and ticket information will be announced at a later date.
