High schools can now perform the Britney Spears jukebox musical Once Upon a One More Time. Theatrical licensor Music Theatre International has released the high school version of the 2023 Broadway musical for licensing, making the title available to non-college school groups in North America, the U.K., and Australia.
Young performers have been MTI's first priority when it comes to this title. This high school version follows news of a JR. edition aimed at elementary, junior high, and middle schools, though the high school version is the first to become available for performances.
Featuring a book by Jon Hartmere, the musical uses 23 of Spears' most popular songs—including "Crazy," "Oops!...I Did It Again," "Lucky," and "Toxic"—to tell a story of a group of fairytale princesses whose world is turned upside down when a progressive fairy godmother arrives with a copy of The Feminine Mystique. The high school version presents the full-length musical with slight edits and materials designed expressly for teenage performers.
“We know there is a huge demand from teachers and high school performers who can’t wait to bring this show to their stages," says MTI Chief Operations Officer and Director of Development and Education John Prignano in a statement. "Giving schools the first chance to produce the show is our way of saying thank you to the dedicated members of the educational theatre market."
“I’m thrilled that Once Upon a One More Time(High School Version) will add more chapters to the fairy tale under [MTI CEO] Drew [Cohen] and John’s stewardship and couldn’t be more pleased with MTI’s plans for it,” adds Hartmere.
