Stephen Flaherty is one-half of the award-winning songwriting duo behind Ragtime, Once on This Island, Rocky, Seussical the Musical, and the upcoming Anastasia. But, as of October 26, he is also one-half of a married couple.
Flaherty wed longtime partner Trevor Hardwick at the Manhattan Marriage Bureau. Hardwick is the secretary and the treasurer of Pen and Perseverance, the music management organization that Hardwick and Flaherty own together.
According to The New York Times, the two reportedly met on a blind date set up by a mutual friend in 1991.
Flaherty and his writing partner, lyricist Lynn Ahrens, earned their first Tony nomination for the original score of Once on This Island. (Ahrens also earned a nomination for the book of that same musical.) The team later won a Tony in 1998 for the original score to Ragtime. The two wrote the music for the animated film Anastasia, for which they earned Oscar nominations for Original Song “Journey to the Past” and Original Musical or Comedy Score, and Golden Globe nominations for Original Song “Journey to the Past” and “Once Upon a December.”
The stage version of Anastasia premiered at Hartford Stage and transfers to Broadway this spring.
