Amy Herzog's new adaptation of Ibsen's An Enemy of the People is joining the licensing catalogue of Concord Theatricals, which will license the work to schools and theatres via its Samuel French imprint. The title is currently available for professional productions.

Herzog's take on the Ibsen classic debuted on Broadway last season, with Succession star Jeremy Strong leading the cast as Doctor Thomas Stockmann. Herzog won a Drama Desk Award for the adaptation, which was also nominated for a 2024 Tony Award.

Set in a small Norwegian spa town, An Enemy of the People follows the principled Doctor Thomas Stockmann as he attempts to alert the public that the spa’s water is poisoned. The resulting backlash to his revelation, borne out of society's desperation for financial preservation, examines the morality of public outcry and the struggles shouldered by whistleblowers across time.

"I'm thrilled to be teaming up with Concord Theatricals again on my second Ibsen adaptation, An Enemy of the People," says Herzog in a statement. "Working on Ibsen's classic play, I was gobsmacked by its relevance to our contemporary politics. I'd love to see this great old play embraced by the next generation of theatre makers here in the U.S. and internationally, and I'm grateful that Concord will bring the play to new audiences."

"Amy is the rare dramatist who can spar with the classics and make the result feel like a work that’s truly her own. This adaptation offers an electrifying take on this well-known play that will move contemporary audiences,” adds Concord Vice President of Acquisitions and Artistic Development Amy Rose Marsh. "For theatres, this is a timely choice of material, as we, as a society, wrangle with the challenge of misinformation."

Herzog adapted Ibsen's A Doll's House in the 2022-2023 Broadway season. That work is also represented by Concord, along other Herzog-penned titles Mary JaneBelleville, and 4000 Miles.
