Industry News All Broadway Marquees Will Dim for Adrian Bailey, Maggie Smith, Gavin Creel; Committee Reviewing Policies Following Outcry

Theatre fans have been vocal about previously announced partial dimming plans for Bailey and Creel.

In a dramatic reversal of two earlier announced decisions, the Broadway League has revealed that all Broadway marquees will dim for Adrian Bailey and Gavin Creel. In addition, all marquees will dim for Maggie Smith. Bailey's ceremony is still set for October 17, with dates for Creel and Smith's dimmings to be determined in coordination with their families.

Both Bailey and Creel were originally announced to receive partial dimming ceremonies, with the majority of theatres not participating. Online outcry from theatre fans in response to those decisions was swift and powerful. An online petition launched by theatre journalist and critic Adam Feldman to get a full dimming ceremony for Creel (who died September 30 at the age of 48) currently has more than 20,000 signatures.

The release from the Broadway League, which coordinates such efforts between the various theatre owning groups across Broadway's 41 theatres, indicates that the passionate response has been heard, sharing that the Committee of Theatre Owners will review their dimming policies and procedures.

Marquee dimming is traditionally done by all Broadway theatres as organized by The Broadway League, though select theatres can elect to do an individual dimming in situations where the League is unable to secure the participation of all theatre owners. The partial dimming is unusual but had seemed to be becoming increasingly frequent. A partial dimming was announced for The Wiz star Hinton Battle following his passing earlier this year, but became a full dimming after online outcry.

This news of the full dimming ceremony for Smith, who died September 27, is its first announcement, and does not follow the online controversy surrounding Creel and Bailey.

“Maggie Smith’s performances were many and varied and always memorable,” says Interim League President Jason Laks in a statement. “We were lucky enough to have had her grace our stages in Tony-winning and Tony-nominated performances in which her artistry, style, and quick wit shined. Hers was a rare talent that delighted generations of theatregoers, and will not soon be forgotten.”
