Dear Evan Hansen star Alex Boniello will lead an industry presentation of The Way Out, a new play from playwright Diana Amsterdam, who passed away in 2019. The work is being posthumously developed by Amsterdam's widower Sandy Silverberg, of Sanford Silver Productions. The invitation-only presentation will be held November 2.
Joining Boniello in the cast will be Gus Birney (The Sign in Sidney Brustein's Window), Sebastian Delascasas (How to Defend Yourself), Damon J. Gillespie (Aladdin), Chris Gray (The Mist), and Elizabeth Teeter (Beetlejuice).
The play is inspired by Amsterdam's time living on a commune in upstate New York in 1969 as men were being drafted to fight in a war they didn't agree with. Amsterdam's previous works include Fast Girls; and the short plays Lingerie, Milk (Amsterdam), and One Naked Woman and a Fully Clothed Man.
Dave Solomon is directing and has penned additional material. Also working on the project are assistant director Ashley Alexandra, general manager Evan Bernardin Productions, casting director Kate Lumpkin, composer Michael Holland, production stage manager Melanie T. Morgan, and assistant stage manager Elizabeth Allen.
