Obituaries Actor Michael John McGann Passes Away at 70

Mr. McGann was seen in the Broadway revivals of Arsenic and Old Lace, Hamlet, and Annie.

Actor Michael John McGann passed away December 28, 2022, as confirmed by his family. He was 70 years old.

Mr. McGann was a Brooklyn-based performer known for his deft handling of classical roles, including Teddy Brewster in Arsenic and Old Lace, and Guildenstern in Hamlet opposite Stephen Lang. He performed in Shakespeare Festivals throughout the country, and in 1978, he met a young Tom Hanks, who would later credit him as one of the performers who helped him find a place in the entertainment business. In an essay for AARP in 2019, Hanks detailed how Mr. McGann pushed him to move to New York, cosigned on his first lease, and taught him how to file his taxes as a working actor.

In 1997 Mr. McGann returned to the Broadway stage in the first revival of Charles Strouse and Lee Adams' Annie, playing Bert Healy, Drake, Morgenthau, and several ensemble roles. Off-Broadway he appeared as Stephano in The Tempest and in an early musical adaptation of The Hunchback of Notre Dame at the Westbeth Theatre.

Mr. McGann's final onstage appearance was in October 2022, when he participated in Resident Acting Company's Sonnets for an Old Century.

Mr. McGann is survived by his brothers Daniel and Raymond and his niece Rebecca Betz.
