London's West End is getting a new revival of Sophocles' Elektra, as translated by Anne Carson. Daniel Fish, a Tony nominee for his 2019 reimagining of Rodgers and Hammerstein's Oklahoma!, will direct, with performances beginning January 24, 2025, at the Duke of York's Theatre. Opening night will be February 5, with the limited engagement continuing for 11 weeks. A pre-West End run will be held at Theatre Royal Brighton January 13-18, 2025.
Starring in the production will be Academy Award winner Brie Larson, who will make her West End debut in the title role. “I couldn’t be more excited to perform in this Greek drama, or in better company collaborating with Daniel Fish and Anne Carson," says Larson in a statement. "Storytelling has always been the way I organize life, feelings, and experiences. I look forward to sharing space with the wonderful West End audience while we explore this timeless story.” Further casting, by Heather Basten, is to be announced.
Elektra follows its titular character in the days following her father's assassination and the return of her long-lost brother, Orestes, both looking to avenge the murder. This revival, the West End's first in more than a decade, will be the U.K. premiere of Carson's translation, originally penned in 2001.
“What is ancient and what is contemporary?," posits Fish in a statement. "Carson’s translation explodes this question. It is a thrilling challenge to work on Sophocles’ tragedy, by way of Carson’s words, and on the beautiful stage of The Duke of York’s with Brie Larson."
The production will feature choreography by Annie-B Parson, scenic design by Jeremy Herbert, costume design by Doey Lüthi, lighting design by Adam Silverman, sound design by Max and Ben Ringham, and music by Ted Hearne. Kate Godfrey will serve as voice and dialect coach. Empire Street Productions is producing.
