The Classical Theatre of Harlem’s free outdoor production of The Bacchae continues its run at Marcus Garvey Park after opening July 11. The new version of the Euripides tragedy, adapted by Bryan Doerries, is scheduled to play through July 28.
According to production notes, The Bacchae tells the story of Dionysus (God of wine and ecstasy) who “returns to his hometown in order to clear his mother’s name and punish the insolent city for not allowing its citizens to worship him.”

Directed by Carl Cofield, the production stars Jason C. Brown as Dionysus, R.J. Foster as Pentheus, CB Murray as Cadmus, Brian D. Coats as Tiresias, and Andrea Patterson as Agave. Rounding out the cast are Lori Vega, Andrew Farella, Malik Reed, Gabrielle Djenné, Rebecca Ana Peńa, Alicynn Yaffee, Daniela Funicello, Ashley Larosa, Brynlie Helmich, Sai Rodboon, Hannah Gross, Madelyn Lalonda, Harmony Jackson, and Kat Files.
The Bacchae features choreography by Tiffany Rae-Fisher, costume design by Lex Liang, lighting design by Alan C. Edwards, scenic design by Christopher and Justin Swader, sound design by Curtis Craig, and project design by Katherine Feer.
Created and performed by Sydney-based comedian and visual artist Sam Kissajukian, the show comes to New York directly from a sold-out engagement at Edinburgh Fringe Festival
Surrounded by period-accurate, 19th-century holiday decorations lit via candlelight, the 70-minute production is based on Dickens' own script of the classic.
