Film & TV News 2019 Emmy Awards Celebrate Broadway With Nominations for Fosse/Verdon, Billy Porter, and More Other nominees include Viola Davis, Laura Linney, and Phoebe Waller-Bridge.

The FX limited series Fosse/Verdon scored big when Emmy nominations were announced for the 71st Annual Primetime Television Awards.

With a total of 17 nominations—including Best Limited Series—the behind-the-scenes look at the lives and careers of Broadway power couple Bob Fosse and Gwen Verdon earned nods for Broadway vets Michelle Williams and Sam Rockwell, as well as nominations for Alex Lacamoire (Outstanding Music Director for “Life is a Cabaret”), director Thomas Kail, and Margaret Qualley for her performance as Ann Reinking.

Recently seen Off-Broadway, Phoebe Waller-Bridge was nominated for Season 2 of Fleabag as Best Actress in a Comedy. The series received a Best Comedy nod, as well, among its 11 nominations.

Tony winner and fashion icon Billy Porter garnered a nod for his portrayal of Pray Tell in Pose in the Leading Actor in a Drama category, with the series earning a total of 6 nominations, including best series.

The 2018 Tony Awards earned a nomination as live variety special, while hosts Sara Bareilles and Josh Groban both scored nods for original music and lyrics for their song "This One's for You." Springsteen on Broadway earned two nominations; RENT on Fox received five. And Documentary Now, which spoofed the documentary of Company's cast album recording, also earned a nod for Original Music and Lyrics.

Tony and Oscar winner Viola Davis and four-time Tony nominee Laura Linney were both nominated in the Lead Actress in a Drama category, while Tony nominee Christina Applegate (Sweet Charity) was nominated in Lead Actress in a Comedy for Dead to Me alongside Off-Broadway vet Natasha Lyonne in Russian Doll.

Also among this year’s crop of nominees are Tony winner Tony Shalhoub and Broadway vet Marin Hinkle (The Tempest, A Thousand Clowns) for The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel; Barry star and Olivier Award–winner Sarah Goldberg for Barry; Broadway alum Jessica Hecht for Special; and King Lear, starring Anthony Hopkins, which was nominated for Best Television Movie.

The Guest Actress in a Drama Series this year is a Broadway powerhouse with four Tony winners: Cicely Tyson, Phylicia Rashad, Cherry Jones, and Jessica Lange. Additional Broadway vets nominated include Paul Dano, Fiona Shaw, Liev Schreiber, and John Leguizamo.

Broadway designers recognized for their small-screen work this year include David Korins (Beetlejuice) for the Oscars and Jason Sherwood for his work on RENT on Fox, while Broadway casting directors Cindy Tolan (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel) and Bernie Telsey (Fosse/Verdon) also earned nominations.
