Hamilton may be heading to Washington, D.C., next month, but for now, the nation's capital is enraptured by Lin-Manuel Miranda's earlier musical, In the Heights.
Two productions of Miranda and Quiara Alegría Hudes' Washinton Heights-set collaboration earned top marks at the 2018 Helen Hayes Awards: a presentation by Olney Theatre Center and Round House Theatre and the Spanish-language production from GALA Hispanic Theatre.
The majority of the categories are presented in two categories: "Hayes," which celebrates productions in which the company is comprised of mostly Equity actors) and "Helen," reserved for those with mostly non-Equity performers.
GALA's In the Heights led the pack out of both the Hayes and Helen productions during the May 14 ceremony, earning nine awards in the Helen categories including Outstanding Production of a Musical.
Additional winners included the pre-Broadway premiere of Mean Girls at the National Theatre, which earned the award for Outstanding Visiting Production, and Alessandra Baldacchino and Abby Corrigan, who shared the award for Outstanding Performer in a Visiting Production for their work in the national tour of Fun Home.
