Tony nominee Daphne Rubin-Vega and writer-director Aaron Mark have released an audio play adaptation of Mark’s Empanada Loca. Rubin-Vega headlined the solo show’s world premiere at Off-Broadway’s Labyrinth Theater Company in 2015. The audio version is available for purchase on Audible and iTunes.

Inspired by the legend of Sweeney Todd—which of course has a history of stage adaptations—Empanada Loca stars Rubin-Vega as Dolores, a woman who resides in an abandoned New York subway tunnel. Through an extended monologue, Dolores reveals her disturbing past in prison, on the streets, and as an accomplice of a scheme involving a cannibalistic empanada shop.

Rubin-Vega, who received Tony nominations for her performances in Rent and Anna in the Tropics, earned Drama Desk, Outer Critics Circle, and United Solo Festival Award nods for her star turn in the grim and grisly production.

The release, recorded by Andrew Hollander at Sugarbox Studios, is produced by Mark and Rubin-Vega. It was edited by Arron Gittleman and features sound design by Ryan Rumery.
