The theatrical premiere of First Run Features' The Pulitzer at 100, the latest documentary by Oscar and Emmy-winning director Kirk Simon, is scheduled for July 21 at Lincoln Plaza Cinema. Openings in other cities will follow.
The film explores how the Pulitzer winners in 21 categories for literary excellence in journalism and the arts are chosen and how the award has the power to change both lives and communities.
The Pulitzer at 100 features interviews with numerous Pulitzer Prize winners, including playwrights Paula Vogel (Indecent), Tony Kushner (Angels in America), and Ayad Akhtar (Disgraced, next season's Junk), as well as Toni Morrison, Michael Chabon, Junot Díaz, Carl Bernstein, Robert Caro, Martin Baron, Nicholas Kristof, Thomas Friedman, David Remnick, Wynton Marsalis, and John Adams. Martin Scorsese, Helen Mirren, Natalie Portman, Liev Schreiber, John Lithgow, and Yara Shahidi also offer readings from Pulitzer-winning works.
Interwoven with the stories of the journalists and artists is the history of the man who created it, Joseph Pulitzer. The diverse stories explored in the film, according to production notes, “relate to immigration, race, gender, and above all freedom of speech – all issues that are ever more relevant in America today.”
