The Broadway production of Indecent, the newest work by Pulitzer Prize winner Paula Vogel, plays its final performance at the Cort Theatre August 6, marking the end of its history-making extended run. Shortly after winning two Tony Awards, the show announced that it would close June 25; but, as previously reported, producer Daryl Roth later ripped up the closing notice and extended performances for another six weeks.
BroadwayHD filmed the August 3 performance of the play, which will be made available on the theatre streaming service in January 2018.
Vogel, who earned the 1998 Pulitzer Prize for Drama for How I Learned to Drive, made her Broadway debut with Indecent. The production also marked the Broadway debut of director Rebecca Taichman, who won the 2017 Tony Award for Best Direction of a Play. Lighting designer Christopher Akerlind also took home a Tony Award, and the work was nominated for Best Play.
Indecent began Broadway previews April 4 following an acclaimed Off-Broadway run at the Vineyard Theatre in spring 2016. The show officially opened on Broadway April 18, and at the time of closing, will have played 136 performances.
Indecent is inspired by the real-life controversy surrounding the 1923 Broadway production of Sholem Asch's God of Vengeance, the love story of two women. At the time, the reaction to Asch’s work was divided between those who considered it to be groundbreaking and by others as traitorous. The play, which charts the history of the drama and the artists who risked their lives to perform the show, is created by Vogel and Taichman, with a script by Vogel.
Indecent features music composed by Lisa Gutkin and Aaron Halva. The cast is made up of Katrina Lenk, Mimi Lieber, Max Gordon Moore, Tom Nelis, Steven Rattazzi, Richard Topol, Adina Verson, Ben Cherry, Andrea Goss, and Eleanor Reissa.
Following the Broadway production, a series of regional premieres will follow, beginning with the Guthrie in 2018.
