The musical adaptation of Moulin Rouge!, directed by Alex Timbers, has assembled a creative team replete with celebrated designers.
Sonya Tayeh, a two-time Emmy nominee for So You Think You Can Dance, will choreograph. She previously received a Lucille Lortel Award and Obie for her work on David Henry Hwang’s dance play, Kung Fu. A dance lab for the new musical was held in August.
Also on board for the highly anticipated project are Tony winners Derek McLane and Catherine Zuber (set and costume design, respectively), Tony nominees Justin Townsend (lighting) and Peter Hylenski (sound), and Drama Desk-winning wig designer David Brian Brown.
Matt Stine joins the previously reported orchestrator and arranger Justin Levine on the music team as music producer.
“These artists are at the forefront of the very best creative works being made today,” said producer Carmen Pavlovic of Global Creatures in a statement. “The thrilling challenge we’ve laid down to this accomplished team is to make something that feels as unique and unexpected today as what audiences first experienced when the film burst its way into our hearts…I have no doubt that they will surpass that goal.”
Moulin Rouge!, which features a book by Tony winner John Logan, has a lab presentation scheduled for October 30–December 15. An official announcement of the musical’s premiere engagement will be announced at a later date.
Baz Luhrmann's 2001 film uses a combination of pop staples and original tunes to follow the tragic relationship between a poet Christian and the singer and courtesan Satine against the backdrop of opulent Paris nightclub in the early 20th century.
