Watching Anastasia’s Zach Adkins explore Washington Heights, one would never guess he is one of Broadway’s most talented rising stars. Then he takes his place center stage at the Broadhurst theatre and lets out a soaring tenor, wowing audiences nightly.

While Adkins' talent is abundant, it was still a journey to becoming a leading man on Broadway. Starting out as an ensemblist and understudy in Anastasia, Adkins needed to discover his own version of Dmitry. “I started trying to find solutions to make the part my own in a very realistic way and I think that translated well in the recasting. I was going into the audition room, comfortable in my version. I wasn’t doing exactly what Derek [Klena, the original Dmitry] was doing. I wanted to give the creative team something that they were really familiar with but also something authentically me.”

Adkins takes us through a typical Thursday—from his morning walk with his dog and rehearsing for his upcoming 54 Below show to how he prepares for his evening performance—giving Playbill an inside glimpse at what it is like to star on Broadway.
