DESCRIPTION

Barefoot Shakespeare Company is seeking non-union actors for William Shakespeare’s Titus Andronicus.

Titus Andronicus: The Unmaking of Man. Rome 1395. Fresh off a victory against the Goths, General Titus is thrust into the spotlight as Rome finds itself in need of a new emperor. Betrayal, villainy and chaos reign supreme as we see the unmaking of the once honorable and militant Titus. Revenge is a dish best served…with wine. Presented, free of charge, at Summit Rock, Central Park.

BREAKDOWN:

Titus Andronicus - 25-50. Any Ethnicity. He/Him. Proud Roman general who becomes caught in a cycle of violence and revenge that ultimately leads to his downfall.

Marcus Andronicus - 25-40. Any Ethnicity. She/Her and/or They/Them. Titus' sibling. Rational, wise, and empathetic, Marcus is a stabilizing force, often acting as an advisor to Titus.

Aaron - 25-45. Black. He/Him. Cunning, deceitful, and unapologetically ambitious, Aaron uses his intellect and charm to gain power and influence. Tamora's lover.

Lavinia/Alarbus - 20s. Any Ethnicity. She/Her. Titus' daughter who becomes a victim of horrific violence that leaves her unable to communicate verbally. Doubles as Alarbus, Tamora’s child who is sacrificed by Titus at the top of the play.

Saturninus - 25-45. Asian/Indigenous/Latine/White. He/Him. The new emperor of Rome who becomes embroiled in a power struggle with Titus and his family. Initially regal and pompous, as his reign progresses he descends into madness and brutality.

Demetris - 20s. Any Ethnicity. Any gender or pronouns. One of Tamora’s vicious and sadistic children.

Chiron - 20s. Any Ethnicity. Any gender or pronouns. One of Tamora’s vicious and sadistic children.

Lucius - 25-45. Person of the Global Majority. He/Him and/or They/Them. Titus' surviving child who leads a rebellion against the corrupt reign of Saturninus in Rome.

Bassianus/Third Goth - 25-35. Person of the Global Majority. He/Him and/or They/Them. Saturninus' sibling and rival; a good-natured and honorable man whose hatred for Tamora and Aaron leads to his being murdered and tossed into a pit. Also, a member of the Goth army aligned with Lucius.

Quintus/First Goth
- 25-35. Person of the Global Majority. He/Him. One of Titus’ children as well as a leader within Lucius’ rebellion.

Martius/Nurse/Second Goth - 30-50. White. She/Her and/or They/Them. One of Titus’ children. The nurse who delivers Tamora and Aaron’s child. A member of the Goth army aligned with Lucius.

Mutius/Aemilius - 25-45. Person of the Global Majority. He/Him and/or They/Them. One of Titus’ children. A messenger and member of Saturninus’ court.

Tamora - ALREADY CAST - 30s. White. She/Her. Vengeful queen of the Goths. Mother of Chiron and Demetrius.

Pronouns listed below reflect the character’s pronouns. Trans actors and gender nonconforming actors are strongly encouraged to submit, choosing roles they are most comfortable playing.
