Pagosa Springs Center for the Arts, professional theatre company, is seeking a Technical Director for immediate hire through September 2025, with the possibility of extension or permanent employment.
The Technical Director/Lead Carpenter for Thingamajig Theatre Company at the Pagosa Springs Center for the Arts is responsible for overseeing the technical aspects of all productions and events, including sound, lighting, video equipment, and overall technical operations, ensuring the smooth execution of a live event or recording by managing technical crews, coordinating equipment setup, and making real-time decisions to maintain quality during a broadcast or performance. They could be called upon to assist a lighting, sound or projection designer with setting up systems for productions or events. They are solely responsible for executing the build of every production as they will be the only carpenter on staff.
Thingamajig Theatre company has operated for 15 years with one Technical Director/Lead Carpenter and a crew of volunteers. Typically, three mainstage shows are built for a summer repertory season, with one children's theater production, a fundraiser and two special events. Typically, three to four shows are put up in the winter season, along with numerous low tech events.
Thingamajig Theatre Company members who thrive in our working environment value artistic integrity, creative problem solving, working with a group of like-minded individuals and especially people who thrive working with autonomy. There will be no set hours for this position, only event deadlines. The individual holding this position will be responsible for creating their own schedule, scheduling in volunteer assistance, keeping up with production deadlines and working alongside fellow production artists. A person who accepts this position must enjoy working with volunteers as well as being a full team player and doesn't consider lending a hand a burden. Enjoyment in the creative problem solving process is a must.
Our space is a 150 black box with the stage in a thrust configuration. As well as a versatile lobby stage in another room where special events take place. The theatre has a full working shop.
The town of Pagosa Springs is a beautiful rural mountain town with hot springs, mountain trails, Wolf Creek Ski Resort and lots of mountain trails. Half of our audience members come from the community, the other half from the tourist population. Our performers and designers get recruited by Artistic Director Tim Moore through a national audition process. Our Charge Artist Jill Fives is noteworthy as being one of the most talented charge artists in the country. It is point of pride that we get to work with her.
Current details:
The next show opens on February 28th 2025, if someone would like to start immediately, this would be their first small build. The summer season begins rehearsals approximately May 15th. All sets would be completed at this time for the three summer musicals, and the summer months would be spent on special events and set maintenance. Typically followed by strike and a break. Typically, we host an October show, December show and February show along with special events.
We are looking to hire someone ASAP until Sept 15th, with the intent to keep a person full time if both parties are happy with their current arrangement. $42,000 for a starting annual salary. $25,000 from Feb 1-Sept 15. A Room in Company Housing is included.
Company Housing is located a few miles from the theatre space. It is a furnished 24 queen bed house with 7 bathrooms and 12 bedrooms and 3 refrigerators and onsite laundry built in 2017. In the summer months May 15- August 31, the house typically hosts 14-22 actors, designers, interns. In the off season, the house typically has about a 3 month period with 1-10 other artists living there depending on the size of the current show. Typically, 4-5 months out of the year the Technical Director would be the only resident. The Technical Director would have a private room and a shared bathroom.
Key Responsibilities:
Lead and actively participate in all aspects of the summer season build, ensuring high-quality scenic construction.
Oversee the maintenance and operation of all technical aspects of the theatre, including scenic elements, lighting, sound, and rigging.
Serve as the primary carpenter, responsible for set builds and installations.
Manage and maintain theatre facilities, tools, and inventory.
Work collaboratively with designers, directors, and production teams to bring artistic visions to life.
Ensure adherence to safety protocols and best practices in all technical areas.
Qualifications:
Advanced level carpentry skills are a must.
Strong experience in scenic construction, rigging, lighting, and sound.
Ability to manage timelines and lead technical crews effectively.
Problem-solving skills and adaptability in a fast-paced production environment.
Professional theatre experience preferred.
