BAL Mission 

Brooklyn Acting Lab's mission is to create innovative theatrical works that reflect our diverse global community, and to nurture new talent by providing comprehensive arts training for children and adults.

In addition to in-house programs, BAL partners with schools and community based organizations to provide arts-in-education programming, performances, and events, collaborating across the performing arts in order to exchange work and ideas with artists nationally and internationally.

Description

BAL youth theater arts programs are rooted in a pedagogy of community, inquiry and self-expression. We believe that play/improvisation are essential to creativity, liberation, and joy. We believe that all children are creative and whole. 

BAL holds space and time for youth to explore their personal creative process and develop their craft.  The arts are a journey into a world of inquiry. At BAL we ask questions.  At BAL we embark on a collaborative adventure with youth ensembles and co-create new stories, deconstruct and reconstruct classics, and collectively imagine and embody the visions we hold for our future. 

Our work at BAL is informed by international theater practices and traditions including but not limited to  Stanislavski, Grotowski, Eugenio Barba, Augusto Boal, Tadeuz Kantor, Anna Deveare Smith, Viola Spolin, Tadashi Suzuki, Viewpoints, and Commedia dell’Arte. 

Position

BAL is currently seeking theater, music, and dance teaching artists and directors/music directors/choreographers for Spring and Summer 2021 Youth Programs. The spring program is after-school and the summer program is Mon-Friday (9AM-3PM). 

BAL  is currently seeking theater, dance, and musical artists to teach spring and summer programs for youth (4-15 yrs. old).We are seeking motivated, engaging, and inspiring individuals who are passionate about working and collaborating with youth in a community setting. 

Responsibilities: 

• Teaching artists create and facilitate workshops with youth in collaboration with BAL staff

• Teaching artists will devise/rehearse/direct performance pieces with youth ensembles incorporating movement, music, and text. 

• Teaching artists will work with youth on nurturing and developing their movement/dance, vocal, improvisational, acting, and performance skills. 

• Teaching artists will ensure a clean, safe, and nurturing environment for all youth

Requirements and Qualifications

• Experience working with youth in the performing arts

• Desire to work collaboratively and commitment to community -building 

• Able to work in-person outdoors and virtually

• Ability to co-plan and co-teach with others

• Effective leadership and communication skills

• Positive, yes and attitude

• Able to adapt and respond

• Creative, imaginative, and enthusiastic about play (especially outdoor play)

• Prepared and also able to let go and be in the present moment 

• Punctual, reliable, and consistent

Physical Requirements

• Able to work outdoors in the spring and summer months

Compensation

Based on experience and position.
