ABOUT THE PLAY

HAROLD AND BABS by D.A. Mindell. NON-EQ. Cast of 4. Harold and Babs are miserable. So miserable that they find themselves on the roof of their marital home on the same night, prepared to jump off and end it all. Their problem? They’re both transsexual, and in 1954, that’s a miserable thing to be. Their solution? If Harold transitions to be Babs, and Babs transitions to be Harold, they can live their lives with no one catching wise. At first, everything is sunshine and apple pie. But as the new Harold climbs the political ladder on Capitol Hill, Babs finds the life of a housewife stifling to her newfound freedom. Gender roles and ideology clash on the floor of the House Un American Activities Committee. Just how much greener is the grass on the other side, anyway? And how much does it matter?

CHARACTER BREAKDOWN

We're especially seeking actors comfortable with movement and pantomime. Don't overthink it; we're not looking for trained dancers. The ideal performer for this is someone who is curious and eager to work with a trained movement director to develop stretches of choreographed pantomime accompanied to music for a few wordless vignettes in the show. Even if you've never worked with a movement director before, you're encouraged to sign up! If you have questions regarding accessibility, please email those to [email protected] and [email protected].

HAROLD. Trans man, 30s. White.

BABS. Trans woman, 30s. White.

BERNIE. Short for Bernadette or Bernard, definitely one of those. 13 years old. White. *We are seeking adults over the age of 18 to play this role. Actors under the age of 18 need not apply.*

MR. KLINE/MRS. KLINE. A man, a woman. Both 30s. A married couple. Black. Both characters played by a single actor.
