Mountain Theatre Company, North Carolina’s oldest professional theatre organization, is seeking to hire a Sound Designer for GREASE. This position will join the experienced, award-winning team behind Western North Carolina's premier professional theatre company. Mountain Theatre Company, currently in their 86th season, is the largest arts organization for over 50 miles, and attracts visitors to Highlands, North Carolina from all over the world.

JOB DESCRIPTION

This position calls for an energetic, dynamic, and dedicated individual who works well with a great deal of independence and exercises independent judgment while performing a variety of duties. The Sound Designer works closely with the Artistic Director and Production Manager to execute all audio-related aspects of the production. The Sound Designer is required to attend all technical rehearsals through to the official opening of the performance (June 5th, 2024).

The Sound Designer will also work closely with the A1/Engineer to ensure the production runs smoothly after their departure. We welcome our Sound Designer to stay and serve as the A1/Engineer for the production run with additional competitive compensation. Travel and Housing are provided by Mountain Theatre Company.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:


  • Creating and translating a sound design (including all sound cues and plotting) consistent with the creative vision of the Artistic Director

  • Attending Production Meetings as necessary, as well as attending all technical rehearsals

  • Overseeing and assisting in all necessary setup and breakdown

  • Managing expendable inventory, i.e. batteries, mic tape, gaff tape, etc. , and will report to the Production Manager when supplies need to be replenished

Preferred skills and other requirements include but are not limited to:


  • Enthusiasm for live event production

  • Have demonstrated success in previous production work, with a focus on sound design, soundboard operation, and live mixing in a theatrical setting

  • Familiarity with Qlab and Behringer Digital Mixers

  • Detail-oriented with the ability to work independently and as part of a team

  • Willingness to perform, at times, physically demanding tasks, with the ability to lift items potentially weighing up to 50 pounds

  • Availability both during the week and on the weekends for both daytime and evening hours, especially through scheduled tech rehearsal weeks

License/Certification:


  • Driver's License (Preferred)

Contract Dates: May 19th (Travel day) – June 6th (Travel day) or July 24th if also serving as A1/Engineer.
Rehearsal Dates: May 14th - June 4th
Production Dates: June 5th - June 23rd
Role: Sound Design
Project Rate: $2500 (with an additional $2000 to serve as A1/Engineer)
Housing and Travel: Provided/Reimbursement
