The Education Department of Providence Performing Arts Center is seeking dynamic individuals with a background in musical theater/theatre/dance/music to serve as part time teaching artists in their Disney Musicals in Schools program. Reporting to the Director of Education, the Teaching Artists will serve as directors, choreographers, stage managers and music directors for Disney KIDS musicals in select Providence Public elementary schools.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Providence Performing Arts Center is seeking innovative and creative part-time teaching artists with an interest and training in Musical Theater to work on our Disney Musicals in Schools program. Disney Musicals in Schools partners affiliate Teaching Artists with classroom teachers to build a tradition of musical theater performance with the goal of building sustainable theater programs in under-resourced public elementary schools through residency-based professional development for collaborating classroom teachers.

Over the course of a 17-week residency between January and May, a pair of teaching artists will lead each school in the program in learning what is required to produce their very first school musical. Teaching artists will do this through modeling, team-teaching, and coaching schoolteachers in the direction of a Disney KIDS Musical. The musicals will be performed at each individual school and then excerpts from each show will be presented at a culminating showcase at the Providence Performing Arts Center.

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Lead a weekly 90-minute rehearsal for a Disney KIDS Musical for 3^rd-5^th grade students at a local elementary school in conjunction with another teaching artist.
• Lead in the production of a Disney KIDS musical at an elementary school.
• Attend mandatory education teaching artist training sessions, meetings, professional development sessions and occasional special events including a three-day Disney Musicals in Schools specific training and school orientation.

Mandatory Disney Training sessions are happening in Pittsburg 8/23/22-8/25/22 (9:30—5:30 each day or in Minneapolis 8/30/22 – 9/1/22 (9:30 – 5:30 each day). All of the selected candidate’s expenses will be paid to attend training.

• Guide and train a school team of teachers to take the reins as the production’s director, music director, choreographer, and stage manager through modeling, team teaching, and coaching.
• Apply the Disney Musicals in Schools team teaching pedagogy to be taught during teaching artist professional development.
• Submit written lesson plans, assessments, teaching schedules, attendance sheets, and payment invoice forms.
• Arrive prepared 15 minutes early with all the necessary equipment you may need for rehearsal. All equipment will be supplied by PPAC.
• Perform other duties as needed.
• Must be fully up to date with all COVID-19 vaccinations.

KNOWLEDGE & EXPERIENCE

• Demonstrate skills and professional experience in musical theatre, including choreography, directing, performance, and/or music direction.
• Hold a BA, BS, or BFA in Theatre, Education, Educational Theatre, Applied Theatre, or related field, or have equivalent experience.
• Have experience working as a Teaching Artist or classroom teacher.
• Have experience working with diverse populations and ages.
• Have experience working on a play or musical with children.
• Demonstrate strong classroom management skills.
• Have excellent collaborative skills and thrive in a group work setting.
• Possess strong time-management skills; be punctual and reliable.
• Demonstrate respect for all students, teachers, and administrators participating in the program, and offer a superior level of professionalism, customer service, and positivity.
• Availability to work after-school hours for rehearsals, as well as occasional daytime and evenings.

• Proficiency with Microsoft software/applications.

• Outgoing, people-oriented person with strong written, verbal, organization, analytical and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to facilitate group discussion and decision making.
• Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously, problem solve, be flexible, innovative, and imaginative.
• Strong attention to detail.
• Prior to being hired you must provide proof of fingerprinting clearance and background check.
• Must provide own transportation (valid driver’s license)

COMPENSATION:

Class instruction - $60/hour
Attending meetings - $15/hour
