The Lighting Design Internship provides an early career designer who identifies as BIPOC the paid opportunity to engage with Robbie Butler and his team during the production process through opening night of Punch. Additionally, the Intern will have access to staff members from Manhattan Theatre Club’s Artistic Production, General Management, and Production Management offices as well as the Production Crew. As a result of this experience, the Intern will learn how lighting design for Broadway is created and implemented and grow their professional network in the process. This production, being a recreation of a production from London, will also offer the Intern the unique opportunity to learn about the intricacies of designing a transfer from the UK to Broadway.
The ideal candidate is an early career lighting designer who identifies as BIPOC and has not yet worked on a Broadway production. They possess a comprehensive understanding of the production process developed through practical design experiences on either the academic, semi-professional, or professional level. They are eager to seek answers to questions that will lead to a deepened understanding of the design process as well as current standards and practices of the theatre industry. Their schedules are sufficiently flexible to accommodate irregular working dates and times during August-September 2025.
The Internship time commitment totals about 75 hours over 4-5 weeks. Specific working dates and times are flexible and will be determined by the Intern and Mr. Butler based upon the PUNCH production schedule. The compensation is $3,000.
Please send a cover letter outlining your interest and qualifications along with a résumé detailing your theatre design experience to [email protected]. Use “Lighting Design Internship/ FIRST NAME LAST NAME” in the subject line. Applications are being accepted on a rolling basis until the position is filled.
