POSITION OVERVIEW

The Head Carpenter will lead as the supervisor of the touring production for all technical departments. They are responsible for advancing with venues, loading the show in and out, and ensuring the performances run safely.

ROLE & RESPONSIBILITIES

· Lead the carpentry team in the construction and assembly of sets.

· Work with all Department Heads to plan for and ensure the correct, functional, and optimal placement of all show gear in a venue.

· Ensure all tools and equipment are maintained and in safe working order.

· Create documentation for the technical aspects of each venue stop on the route

· Oversee the safe transportation and installation of touring elements, and check in on all departments during load in and load out

· Maintain a safe working environment in compliance with industry standards.

· Run cues as designated during tech and observe all scene changes for safety

· Track local and touring crew per the prevailing contract and report to Company Management for payroll and settlement purposes

· Understand the Employer’s safety handbook, specifically regarding Fall Arrest and Fall Prevention Protocols.

· Work closely with Production Management to advise on staffing, including managing disciplinary action of all touring crew members, and overseeing hiring for open positions

KEY QUALIFICATIONS & ATTRIBUTES

· Strong leadership skills with the ability to guide and support a diverse crew of varying skill levels.

· Detail-oriented with a strong commitment to completing both complex and routine tasks with precision.

· Technical theatre experience is valuable; diverse backgrounds in the performing arts are welcomed. National touring experience is a plus.

· Collaborative team player, comfortable working long hours in close quarters with different types of personalities.

· Flexible and willing to work an 8-show a week schedule, which may include additional calls outside of regular performances for rehearsals

· Ability to adapt to varying loud sound and flashing lighting environments

· Comfortable working in various spaces that may be dark and cramped; adaptability is key in different environments.

· Excellent practical, problem-solving, organizational, planning and time management skills.

· Proficiency in computer skills (Mac and PC) is a bonus; a willingness to learn new technologies is encouraged.

· Excellent communication skills (both written and verbal)

· Attention to detail

· Ability to work under pressure and solve problems

· Be a collaborative team player who is self-motivated and can work autonomously

· Friendly, positive attitude

· Able to physically move 75 pounds, be comfortable lifting and walking backwards, and be comfortable walking up and down stairs.

· Valid Driver’s License / A valid Driver’s License is preferred but not mandatory

· A valid passport or travel document that allows for international travel

OTHER QUALIFICIATIONS

· Strong leadership skills

· Skill with Vectorworks and/or AutoCAD

· Strong technical skills and understanding of stage machinery

· Experience with automation systems in a theatrical setting is a plus, but not required

· Experience in carpentry or related technical theatre work.
