DESCRIPTION

The General Manager will play a senior leadership role at Classic Stage Company. They will report to the Producing Artistic Director and will lead all administrative, financial, and production operations. CSC is a $4M organization, producing as many as four mainstage productions per season, as well as creative development, audience engagement work, and education programs.

This position is responsible for strategic leadership, working closely with the Producing Artistic Director on maintaining the financial health of the theater, producing high quality work on the Off Broadway contract, creating a positive and equitable work culture for employees at both offices and theater, and serving our audience of more than 20,000 patrons per year.

An ideal candidate will bring creativity, good humor, collaborative instincts, adaptability, and strong experience in production, finance, and administration for the non-profit theater. A genuine love of live theater will help a candidate to thrive in this role.

The General Manager will supervise the Associate General Manager, Company Manager, Bookkeeper, Facilities Manager, and production personnel.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Leadership

  • Strategically develop plans that will enhance CSC’s financial, community, and artistic work, participating in major decision-making for the theater.
  • Maintain an equitable workplace including liaising with third-party HR consultant and EDIA training partners for both staff and artist needs.

Production

  • Lead all production-related agreements, including author/licensing, underlying rights, co-production or commercial enhancement, and commissions. With Associate General Manager, provide oversight of all offers/negotiations/contracts including Director, Designer, Actor, Stage Manager, Musicians, and Crew. Create all royalty statements and process payments.
  • Act as point person for all artists’ unions and ensure adherence to all collectively bargained agreements. Represent CSC at all union negotiations.
  • Act as point person for Off Broadway League, including institutional and production memberships and box office reporting.
  • Oversee CSC Covid Safety Protocols.

Finance

  • Strategically develop and monitor annual operating, department, and project-specific budgets, as well as future models for sustainability.
  • Oversee financial management of theater, working with bookkeeper to ensure timely deposits, payments, reconciles, and cash flow projections are performed.
  • Maintain all banking vendor relationships, including stock and credit card accounts and vendors.
  • Act as staff representative on Finance and Audit Committees of the Governing Board, providing reports and insight.
  • Provide oversight of annual audit and 990 reporting.

Administrative

  • Create administrative staff employment agreements.
  • With Producing Artistic Director and Governance Committee, provide oversight and maintenance of Employee Handbook.
  • Administer all HR benefits and annually confirm benefits (health, vision, dental, 401k) with outside vendor, enrolling all employees as per agreements.
  • With outside payroll vendor, ensure all employee & contractor quarterly and year end filings are accurately performed.

Facilities

  • Oversee Facilities Manager.
  • Act as primary contact for theater and office landlords, including negotiations for renewals, signing off on major maintenance issues, and relationship with subletter.
  • Handle annual renewal and maintenance of insurance policies including general liability, workers’ comp, directors & officers.

A successful candidate will have significant experience in arts administration, preferably in the non-profit arena, as this leadership position will benefit from a deep understanding of the industry. The General Manager should be able to create and maintain strong relationships with a wide array of constituencies, as varied as agents, unions, staff, Board, crew, partners, patrons, and vendors, all while being able to skillfully negotiate with many of these parties.

The General Manager should have an understanding of the work required to run successful productions, creatively adapting to the changing environment of Off Broadway and the needs of our artists and community. They will maintain an EDIA lens on all of the theater’s work, ensuring that the Core Values of CSC are always front of mind.

They will be focused and prepared, ready to manage projects of varying scopes and able to deal with the surprises that come with producing live theater. The General Manger should be able to budget realistically and supervise adherence to that budget throughout a season. Adaptability and good humor in the ever-shifting landscape of Off Broadway will be key.
