Development Director, Media Art Xploration (MAX)
Media Art Xploration Mission and History:
Media Art Xploration's (MAX) mission is to produce and present live arts that interrogate the scientific and technological innovations of our times; to connect and engage artists and scientists in exploring how light-speed advances impact our lives and our planet; and to create shared experiences that spark curiosity, wonder, and critical thinking in order to forge a more informed democracy and inspire a better future.
MAX activates a process in which playwrights and computer programmers, composers and roboticists, creative technologists and technologically-curious creatives share their collective expertise to explore a new frontier, a convergence of the arts and sciences, and then share their resulting live art pieces with the public. In 2019, MAX’s first year of programming, we worked with over 100 artists and scientists to bring 25 performances, 10 presentations, and 5 museum installations to over 10,000 audience members across 3 cities in partnership with 7 premiere venues including The Exploratorium, Carnegie Hall, and the Norton Museum.
MAX is seeking a Development Director. The ideal candidate is an agile thinker with significant, demonstrated background in fundraising—both high-level strategy and day-to-day operations—for non profits, and ideally in organizations that focus on the performing arts, science, or technology. The Development Director will create a robust new fundraising strategy for MAX to diversify income sources and increase annual contributed income totals. Our goal is to adjust the model of non-profit sustainability with a combination of fundraising strategies and revenue streams. This individual will be a creative thinker who connects the dots between the funding and development of MAX and the future of the performing arts. This is an excellent opportunity for an excellent early to mid-career arts administrator who is looking for an opportunity to take on a leadership position and have more ownership over organizational growth.
-Design and implement a development strategy for the growth of MAX: Identify funds needed, targets, and approaches. Set ambitious fundraising goals and define the pathways to achieve them.
-Diversify income: Research, devise, and activate new revenue streams
-Oversee individual giving: Expand MAX’s donor base. Manage communications with high-level donors.
-Oversee institutional giving: Maintain and build relationships with institutional funders. Oversee grant applications and reporting.
-Review and manage institutional budgets and ensure MAX is prepared to meet fundraising goals.
-Manage a small but growing team: Provide day-to-day operational oversight of the team, including meeting management; high-level database and systems administration; and weekly and monthly reporting against goals
-BA (required), MA (a plus)
-4+ years of fundraising experience, ideally in arts or science-focused non profits
-Demonstrated success in developing and implementing fundraising strategy
-Extensive experience with CRM softwares
-Budget management experience
-The ability to serve as a strategic thinker, capable of providing positive and proactive solutions to challenges and opportunities
-Collaborative and entrepreneurial spirit; a scrappy and bold personality
-Demonstrated excellence in organizational, managerial, communication, and relationship building skills
-Particular interest and knowledge in performing arts and media arts.
