DESCRIPTION

Museum of Chinese in America is seeking actors to participate in a scene workshop presentation from the novel Interior Chinatown by Charles Yu. This presentation is part of the NEA Big Read public programs. The in-person audition will be held on Tuesday, March 18 from 4:30pm to 6:30pm at 215 Centre Street, NYC 10013.
  • This scene runs approximately 30 minutes.
  • All actors are required to perform off-book.
  • All actors are encouraged to participate in a post-show discussion.
CHARACTER BREAKDOWN

Willis Wu – The protagonist.
Chinese American man, 30s. Ambitious yet quiet, struggles to see himself beyond the roles imposed on him.

Older Brother – Willis’s brother and his defense lawyer.
Chinese American man, 30s. Eloquent, enjoys banter, and fits the “model minority” stereotype more than Willis.

Judge – Presides over the courtroom.
Any race except Asian, any gender, 40s or older. Easily annoyed, serious, and authoritative.

Public Prosecutor – The prosecuting attorney.
White woman, 30s. Professional, eloquent, and quick to jump to conclusions.

Miles Turner – A detective.
Black man, 30s. Charming, well-built, confident, and slightly authoritative. A strict, no-nonsense Black detective.

Sarah Green – A detective.
White woman, 30s. Charming, professional, outwardly progressive but performative, and confident.


WHAT TO PREPARE

Please prepare a 3-5 minutes monologue from contemporary materials of your choice.

DURATION

Rehearsals: Tuesdays - Thursdays 6:30 - 9:30pm, April 1 - 17

*Rehearsal schedule is subject to change.

Performances: Friday, April 18 at 7pm & Saturday, April 19 at 3pm

COMPENSATION

Each actor will be compensated with a stipend of $375, including a free copy of the novel.
