News Watch Madonna Surprise Fans With Sondheim's “Send in the Clowns” Live The pop star sang the musical theatre classic during a free concert in Melbourne, Australia

While in Australia for her Rebel Heart Tour, Madonna offered fans a free, invite-only show in Melbourne March 11. Dressed to the nines in a clown costume, the singer performed “Send in the Clowns”from Stephen Sondheim's 1973 musical, A Little Night Music. It is one of the composer's most well-known songs, having been sung by the likes of Frank Sinatra, Judy Collins and Barbra Streisand.

Madonna’s tour will conclude March 20 in Sydney.

This isn’t the first time Madonna has ventured into Sondheim territory. The pop star performed his Oscar-winning song “Sooner or Later” in Dick Tracy. In fact, the material girl led another musical theatre composer to Oscar glory when she performed “You Must Love Me,” the Oscar-winning Andrew Lloyd Webber-Tim Rice song from the film adaptation of Evita.
