Jeff Daniels will executive produce and star in a new, straight-to-series Showtime drama, according to Deadline.

Rust, based on Philipp Meyer’s debut novel American Rust, centers on the Del Harris, the chief of police in a Rust Belt Pennsylvania town. Played by Daniels, the chief must confront how much he’s willing to do to protect his nearest and dearest when the son of the woman he loves is murdered.

Daniels currently plays Atticus Finch in the Aaron Sorkin–penned play To Kill a Mockingbird on Broadway, which earned the actor a 2019 Tony nomination. He'll play his final performance November 3, with Oscar nominee Ed Harris succeeding him.

The actor made his Broadway performance debut in Fifth of July in 1980, followed by The Golden Age and Redwood Curtain. After a 16-year Broadway hiatus, he returned to the Main Stem in 2009 to star in God of Carnage, which garnered him his first Tony nomination. He also took on the taxing role of Ray in Blackbird, opposite Michelle Williams, which earned him his second of three Tony nominations. Daniels is a five-time Emmy nominee, winning in Best Lead Actor for The Newsroom and Best Supporting Actor for Godless.

With multiple episodes by Oscar nominee Dan Futterman, the series will be co-produced by Platform One Media, headed by CEO Katie O’Connell Marsh. Futterman, Michael De Luca (Escape at Dannemora), and Elisa Ellis for Platform One also executive produce.

Meanwhile, Showtime is also preparing to give another recent Broadway leading man his closeup, with two-time Tony winner Bryan Cranston (Network, All the Way) slated to headline the legal drama Your Honor.
