Off-Broadway's Thirdwing will close out its trilogy of Disney history plays with The Animals Speak, performing August 5-17 at The Wild Project. As with all Thirdwing productions, the play will perform live for in-person audiences and be filmed for on demand streaming. Cameron Darwin Bossert has written and will direct, along with starring as Disney.
The Animals Speak is a followup to Bossert's 2024 work Burbank, following Disney as he embarks on a goodwill tour of South America to try and dissuade them from being influenced by Nazis. Faced with a company at the brink of bankruptcy, the recent loss of his devoted mother, and a strike of his animators, Disney is joined by seminal concept artist Mary Blair, who may just be able to give him the inspiration he needs to get through the rocky period.
Bossert's earlier works focused on the iconic entertainer include The Fairest, about the underpaid and often unseen female team of colorists who worked on Disney animation, specifically Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs; and Burbank, centered on the company's battle against its unionizing animators. Both are currently available to stream at Thirdwing.info.
The actual trip, which happened in 1941, was part of Disney's work producing pro-American propaganda films during WWII. Material gathered from the 1941 trip specifically led to 1942's Saludos Amigos and 1944's The Three Caballeros. The trip previously served as the subject of a 2009 documentary, Walt & El Grupo.
Bossert will share the stage with Ginger Kearns, Cian Genaro, Krysten Wagner, Felipe Arellano, and Adam Griffith. The staging will feature costume design by Yolanda Balaña and music by Deeba Montazeri.
