Andrea Macasaet, who created the role of Anne Boleyn in the Broadway production of the international hit musical SIX, will play Mimi Marquez in the Stratford Festival's upcoming production of Jonathan Larson’s Tony- and Pulitzer Prize-winning musical Rent.
Directed by Thom Allison with choreography by Marc Kimelman and musical direction by Franklin Brasz, the East Village-set musical will play the Canadian venue April 8-October 28. Opening night is June 2.
The cast will also feature Robert Markus as Mark Cohen, Kolton Stewart as Roger Davis, Jahlen Barnes as Benjamin Coffin III, Nestor Lozano Junior as Angel Dumott Schunard, and Erica Peck as Maureen Johnson.
The company is rounded out by Celeste Catena, Nick Dolan as Gordon, Kelly Holiff as Mark’s mom, Masini McDermott, Danielle Verayo, and swing Christine Desjardins.
The production will also have set design by Brandon Kleiman, costume design by Ming Wong, lighting design by Michael Walton, and sound design by Joshua Reid.
Directed by Michael Greif, Rent opened at the Nederlander Theatre April 29, 1996, following previews that began April 16. The musical received 10 1996 Tony nominations, subsequently winning four, including Best Musical. Larson's work also won the 1996 Pulitzer Prize for Drama. After 16 previews and 5,123 regular performances, the production played its final show September 7, 2008.
Set in Manhattan in the 1990s and inspired by Puccini’s opera La Bohème, the hit musical follows a group of young East Village artists, performers, and philosophers as they struggle through the hardships of poverty, societal discord, and the AIDS epidemic in the search for life, love and art.
