The Shed will commemorate Juneteenth with Troy Anthony’s The Revival: It Is Our Duty June 18. The one-night-only engagement will feature a sermon by Adrienne Maree Brown, author of Emergent Strategy and Pleasure Activism.
Written by and starring Anthony, The Revival: It Is Our Duty honors Black ancestry and liberation through ritual and music in celebration of Juneteenth alongside a community choir and band.
“It is such a gift to return to The Shed with The Revival: It Is Our Duty after letting it marinate for a year," says Anthony. "This ritual is a wonderful way for all of us to prepare for Juneteenth. Juneteenth is not about our Black ancestors in Texas finding out about their freedom late. It is about the way that Black people have used every resource available to us in order to free ourselves. It is this revolutionary inspiration that has inspired me to create this music-filled service focused on collective liberation through personal liberation. We all have work to do, and it looks different for each of us. But as Audre Lorde said, I'm ‘doing my work—come to ask you, are you doing yours?’ The Fire Ensemble is presenting this offering as a container to reflect upon everything we've been through in the last few years. We will sing. We will shout. We will dance. And I promise, you will not leave the way that you came."
