A stage musical of the cult classic 1997 film Romy and Michele's High School Reunion will make an Off-Broadway bow this fall. Titled Romy & Michele: The Musical, the work will play Stage 42 beginning October 14 ahead of an October 28 opening night. Kristin Hanggi (Rock of Ages) will direct.
In development for more than a decade, the project features a book by the film's screenwriter, Robin Schiff, and music and lyrics by Gwendolyn Sanford and Brandon Jay. Orchestrations are by Keith Harrison Dworkin.
The musical follows two Valley girls who, eager to impress their former classmates, return to their old stomping grounds a decade later with a lie involving (among other things) Post-Its. Mira Sorvino and Lisa Kudrow starred in the 1997 film version.
This musical adaptation premiered in 2017 at Seattle's 5th Avenue Theatre (also directed by Hanggi), and has since held several developmental workshops in the U.S. and U.K. Casting and further creative team members for the upcoming Off-Broadway bow are to be announced. Barry Kemp, Stephen Soucy, Peter Schneider, and Laurence Mark are producing, with Showtown Productions serving as executive producer.
“Romy and Michele have been icons of friendship, fashion, and individuality from the moment we first met them,” say Kemp and Soucy in a joint statement. “Bringing their story to the New York Stage is the perfect home for their bold and quirky spirit to be reborn. We can’t wait for audiences to enjoy this hilarious and heart-filled new musical.”
Tickets will go on sale later this month. Visit RomyandMicheleTheMusical.com.
