The Pulitzer Prize-winning play English opened at the Todd Haimes Theater January 23. Read the rave reviews from critics here. Stars such as Bonnie Milligan, LaChanze, and Corey Stoll were in attendance. A very special guest was the Duolingo green owl mascot, Duo (the language-learning app is a sponsor of the play).
English, written by Sanaz Toossi, takes place in a classroom in Iran where students are learning English and getting ready to go abroad, and pondering what it means to give up your native tongue in order to assimilate in a new country. See photos from opening night below, where the entire cast, playwright Toossi, and director Knud Adams made their Broadway debuts.
English’s world premiere, a co-production between Roundabout Theatre Company and Atlantic Theater Company, was presented Off-Broadway in 2022. In addition to Toossi winning the 2023 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, the premiere production won the 2023 Obie Award for Best New American Play.
