The Broadway favorite, according to the Hollywood Reporter, is part of the workshop of the new musical War Paint, which is based on the Helena Rubinstein-Elizabeth Arden rivalry. The new musical is from the Grey Gardens writing team, with music by Scott Frankel, lyrics by Michael Korie and a book by Doug Wright.
The acclaimed actress is also set to return to the stage in a new play by Douglas Carter Beane. Entitled Shows for Days, the Lincoln Center Theater production will be directed by Tony winner Jerry Zaks, who helmed the LuPone revival of Anything Goes. Previews, according to the LCT website, will begin June 4.
Shows for Days, according to LCT, is "Douglas Carter Beane’s fond remembrance of his immersion into a life in the theater. The comedy is set in Reading, Pennsylvania in 1973, when 14-year old Car, the play’s narrator and the author’s alter-ego, is introduced to the world of theater through his local community theatre, the Prometheus Theatre, and its devoted cast and crew which is led by Irene, an indomitable force of nature whose life is dedicated to putting on productions she directs, designs and stars in."
As previously reported, LuPone will offer The Lady with the Torch at 54 Below beginning April 1 at 7 PM and continuing through April 14. The evening was conceived and is directed by Tony Award winner Scott Wittman with musical direction by Joseph Thalken, orchestrations by Jonathan Tunick and dialogue by Jeffrey Richman
LuPone, according to press notes, "performs an eclectic collection of torch songs by such composers and lyricists as Arthur Schwartz, Howard Dietz, Jule Styne, Sammy Cahn, Billy Barnes, Harold Arlen, George and Ira Gershwin, and Cole Porter." LuPone is a Tony Award winner for her performances in Evita and Gypsy and an Olivier winner for her work in Les Miserables and The Cradle Will Rock.
