Joseph Hayward, who had been serving as the interim producing artistic director of The York Theatre, has now joined the Off-Broadway company permanently as producing artistic director.

Hayward will continue running the theatre company with Debra Walton, who remains interim associate artistic director. Both had been named to interim positions in November 2024 following the abrupt departure of former Artistic Director James Morgan.

York Theatre Board President Jim Kierstead said in a statement, “On behalf of the Board of Directors, it gives me great pleasure to announce that Joseph Hayward has been unanimously voted in as the permanent producing artistic director of The York Theatre. Joseph’s leadership and vision over the past seven months of transition and rebirth has been nothing short of extraordinary.”

Together, we will build on our remarkable legacy, champion the next generation of musical theatre creators, and usher in a vibrant new era for The York. Hayward previously worked as York Theatre Company's associate producing director for four years. He served as associate director for several York productions before moving on to direct shows of his own, including How to Steal an Election, Liz Callaway…Their Story Goes On, and more.
