Hay Fever, Starring Felicity Kendal, Opens Tonight in London | Playbill

News Hay Fever, Starring Felicity Kendal, Opens Tonight in London A new production of Nöel Coward's Hay Fever, starring stage and TV veteran Felicity Kendal as Judith Bliss, matriarch of a highly theatrical family, opens at the West End's Duke of York's Theatre May 11 (following preivews that began April 29). It is booking for a run through Aug. 1. The production originated at the Theatre Royal Bath and is directed by Lindsay Posner.

Joining Kendal are Simon Shepherd as her husband David, Michael Simkins as Richard Greatham and Sara Stewart as Myra Arundel.

The cast also includes Alice Orr-Ewing (Sorel Bliss), Edward Franklin (Simon Bliss), Celeste Dodwell (Jackie Coryton), Edward Killingback (Sandy Tyrrell) and Mossie Smith (Clara).

Kendal is best known for her many TV roles, including the iconic "The Good Life." Recent West End stage appearances have included productions of Relatively Speaking, The Vortex and Mrs. Warren's Profession.

Shepherd was last seen in the West End in The Duck House at the Vaudeville Theatre. He is probably best known as Dr. Will Preston from ITV's "Peak Practice."

Simkins' recent theatre credits include Oh What a Lovely War (Stratford East), Yes, Prime Minister (U.K. tour and Trafalgar Studios), Loyalty (Hampstead Theatre), Less Than Kind (Jermyn Street Theatre), Taking Steps (Orange Tree Theatre) and The King & I (Royal Albert Hall). Stewart's theatre credits include Heartbreak House (Chichester Festival), The Snow Queen (Rose Theatre, Kingston), Enron (West End & U.K. tour) and Six Degrees of Separation (Old Vic).

In the play, Judith is a once glittering star of the London stage and matriarch of the Bliss family. She, her egocentric novelist husband David and their two Bohemian adult children Sorel and Simon are incapable of sharing the spotlight. Unconventional, risqué, and often downright rude, they are everything a respectable English family should not be. When each member of the family invites a guest to their rural Berkshire retreat, the unassuming visitors are thrown into a living melodrama.
