Cooper stars as Berstein and is co-writing the screenplay and directing, his follow-up to the Oscar-winning A Star is Born. Carey Mulligan will play Bernstein's wife, Felicia Montealegre Cohn Bernstein. Matt Bomer will also reportedly play one of Bernstein's male lovers.
Maestro focuses on the relationship between the celebrated composer and his wife, Felicia. The two wed in 1951, despite Bernstein's homosexuality being somewhat of an open secret. Twenty-five years later, Bernstein left the marriage to be with a male partner before returning to his marriage a year later when Montealegre was diagnosed with cancer. He was with her until she died in 1978. The couple had three children together—Jamie, Alexander, and Nina—who have worked closely with Cooper to develop the project.
In addition to being a celebrated concert conductor and composer, Bernstein wrote several musical theatre scores for Broadway, including On the Town, Peter Pan, Wonderful Town, Candide, and West Side Story.
A release date for the film has not been announced.
