Harvey Fierstein, Billy Rose Theatre Division curator Doug Reside, and the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts at Lincoln Center announced in a live stream that Tony-Award-winning architect and scenic designer David Rockwell will design the Harvey Fierstein Theatre Lab.
Last year, four-time Tony winner Fierstein donated $2.5 million to establish the lab which will be a hub for theatre education geared towards high schoolers, college students, and teachers.
Fierstein and Rockwell previously joined forces in the Broadway productions of Hairspray and Kinky Boots, both of which saw Rockwell designing the Tony Award-nominated sets.
"We are honored to be able to create this space for exploration, innovation, and imagination. Harvey’s vision of creating a new home for the next generation of theater artists is a vital part [of] the Library for the Performing Arts’ mission to inspire and support creativity," said Rockwell.
The 770-square-foot lab, designed by Rockwell and the LAB at Rockwell Group, will feature modular acting blocks, mobile work surfaces, a projection screen, and high-tech design visualization equipment, among other tools for theatre students and creatives.
