Chitty Chitty Bang Bang To Be Revived at U.K's West Yorkshire Playhouse Prior to National Tour | Playbill

News Chitty Chitty Bang Bang To Be Revived at U.K's West Yorkshire Playhouse Prior to National Tour A new stage production of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang is set to launch at the West Yorkshire Playhouse in Leeds, beginning performances Dec. 2, prior to an official opening Dec. 10, for a nine-week season though Jan. 30.

It will then embark on a major U.K and Ireland national tour, beginning performances Feb. 10, under the auspices of Music & Lyrics, a consortium of touring theatres.

The stage musical is based on the 1968 film of the same name with music and lyrics by Richard M Sherman and Robert B Sherman, adapted for the stage by Jeremy Sams from Ian Fleming's story and the MGM script adapted by Ray Roderick. It's the story of a miraculous flying car that changes its inventor's life.

The production will be directed by West Yorkshire Playhouse Artistic Director James Brining, with new choreography by Stephen Mear and production design by Simon Higlett.

In a press statement, Brining has commented, "Directing such an iconic show is a great opportunity, a thrilling challenge for any director. Chitty Chitty Bang Bang is a brilliant adventure story, filled with classic songs and scenes that hold so many memories for so many people. I cannot wait to bring the show not only to Leeds but also to audiences across the U.K. and Ireland."

It was originally brought to the stage in a different production at the London Palladium in 2002, where it ran for three and a half years, and transferred to Broadway's Lyric Theatre (then called the Hilton) in 2005.
