Casting Announced for Signature's New Battle-of-the-Sexes and Baking Musical, Cake Off | Playbill

News Casting Announced for Signature's New Battle-of-the-Sexes and Baking Musical, Cake Off Virginia's Signature Theatre has announced casting for the world premiere of Cake Off, a new musical comedy that pits two dedicated bakers against each other at the 50th annual Millberry baking competition. Todd Buonopane, last seen in Broadway's Cinderella, and Sherri L. Edelen (Signature's Gypsy) will star.

Performances of Cake Off are underway and will continue through Nov. 22.

Cake Off is written by Sheri Wilner (Kingdom City), based on one of her earlier plays. The musical features a book by Wilner and Julia Jordan (Murder Ballad), lyrics by Adam Gwon (The Boy Detective Fails) and Jordan, and music by Gwon. The story follows contestants Rita and Paul as they strap on their aprons and prepare to square off for the million-dollar-prize - "armed with whisks, bowls, knives and eggs, the two engage in an increasingly ludicrous all-out brawl – and only one can remain standing when the timer dings."

Helmed by Signature’s director of new works Joe Calarco, the cast will also feature Jamie Smithson and Ian Berlin.

Cake Off is presented as part of the Women’s Voices Theater Festival, which is dedicated to featuring new work by female playwrights. "As one of the originators of this important festival, Signature is producing three projects with women writers this season," said artistic director Eric Schaeffer. "We're all committed to this cause and I couldn't be more proud of the effort at Signature Theatre and in this city to bring female voices to the stage."

The creative team includes musical direction by Andrea Grody, scenic design by Jason Sherwood, costume design by Frank Labovitz, lighting design by R. Lee Kennedy, sound design by Lane Elms, production stage manager Julie Meyers and production assistant Jessica Skelton. Tickets, starting at $40, are available by calling (703) 820-9771 or visiting SigTheatre. The Signature Theatre is located at 4200 Campbell Ave. in Shirlington, VA.
