Grosses Broadway Grosses Analysis: Funny Girl Hits the Top 5, Leopoldstadt Is Broadway's Top-Selling New Play, and More

Glee star Lea Michele continues to draw crowds, with the revival enjoying the highest-grossing week of its run.

Broadway's Funny Girl, with Glee's Lea Michele starring as Fanny Brice, continues to hit major highs at the August Wilson Theatre, with the musical revival entering the top five highest-grossing productions on Broadway this past week for the first time and enjoying the highest-grossing week of the production's entire run yet again, bringing in $1.7 million.

Last week's other top grossers included The Music Man, which broke the $3 million mark for the 23rd time during its run with $3.03 million; Hamilton with $2.04 million; MJ The Musical with $1.75 million; and The Lion King with $1.71 million. The Phantom of the Opera, now scheduled to end its historic run early next year, came in at a close sixth place with $1.62 million and the most filled seats of the week, playing to standing-room-only crowds at 101.27% of capacity at the Majestic.

Leopoldstadt grossed more than a million for the second week in a row, bringing in $1.16 million and handily becoming Broadway's top-grossing new play of the moment. In a close second is the all-star revival of August Wilson's The Piano Lesson at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre, bringing in $915K even as leading lady Danielle Brooks was out with COVID—the Color Purple Tony nominee is scheduled to return to the production October 25; understudy Shirine Babb filled in during Brooks' absence.

Overall, grosses fell ever so slightly even with the Gabriel Byrne-led Walking With Ghosts adding another show to the boards as of October 18. Last week's cumulative grosses came out to $28.6 million, with capacity remaining steady at 90%. Also affecting grosses this week were single performance cancellations at Almost Famous and KPOP.
